Summer Maintenance Checklist

June 21st, 2016 - by Blueshark Design

Summer is a great time to carry out some maintenance on your home, inside and out. While the weather is warm and dry, it’s the best time to get stuck into some jobs you’ve been meaning to do, or some jobs that you really should be doing every year. This is true both in your home itself and in the garden.

Jobs in the Home

While the weather is warm and dry, it is a good idea to check your windows. In particular, check that the seals are in good condition. Depending on the type of window you have, this may be either a rubber seal or a line of silicone caulk. The latter is usually easier to replace yourself, though both are possible for a competent DIY enthusiast.

It is also a good idea to conduct a basic visual inspection of your roof, to see if there are any signs of damage, loose tiles, or other problems. Even if you only see the beginnings of a problem that might not need immediate attention, it is worth seeing to it while summer lasts as it may not stand up to next winter’s harsher weather.

Jobs in the Garden

Pretty much all gardening is done in the spring and summer, but there are a few home maintenance jobs that you may want to consider incorporating into your yearly routine. If you have decking, check that it is in good condition with no rotten areas or loose nails or screws. You may also want to clean it with a specialist decking cleaner, and then seal it with an appropriate weatherproofing treatment. This will serve both to make it look nice for use in the summer, and seal it against next winter’s weather.

Similarly, patios and driveways can also be cleaned, though will not need any kind of sealing. This can be done with a specialist cleaning solution or by pressure washing.
